Sedona Arizona - 2002

My Aunt Sara Gayle Pyfrom in Phoenix told me for 30 years that when I came to AZ to visit her I should visit Sedona of Red Rock Country fame. So my expectations were very high for that town.  As I said in another posting, in 2002 we decided to fly to Phoenix, rent a car to drive to Las Vegas via Sedona, Williams, Grand Canyon and Hoover Dam.  My cousin said it was really great especially if we were into the New Age Movement!!!!   You might suspect that things would not work out so well after that bit of info.  We left Phoenix in early afternoon allowing not nearly enough time to really see Sedona.  We went to the Chapel of the Holy Cross which was neat.  Then we went to the visitor center where the rude attendant seemed to be incensed that we had not allowed but hours to see the 'most beautiful city in America'.  She was less than helpful but at least we got a Sedona map so we could see how to get to Red Rock State Park on Oak Creek.  On the way to the nice park we saw concrete walls giving privacy to the homes there.  I thought it was really interesting that the walls matched the red rock around us - nice mixing job.  Apprently there are many celebrities that have/had second homes in Sedona like Lucille Ball.

As it was getting late, we decided to leave in time to see some of Oak Creek Canyon.  As we traveled up to Flagstaff, we regretted not having more good daylight to see this very beautiful canyon.  Someday I'd like to go back to see it better.

At the time I was impressed with the red rocks in that area in part because I had not seen any red rock country anywhere in the U.S.  In the last few years I have seen much red rock country especially in AZ, UT and CO so it is not very special to have it.   Anyway, if you visit Sedona wear a New Age cap to get along with the locals.  It is indeed a very pretty place.

After we returned, I told an Air Force buddy about visiting the town.  He asked if I went to the airport.  I said no.  Then he sent me a picture of the Sedona airport perched on a little mesa.  Amazing!  So be prepared if you fly into Sedona!!!  I did see turn-offs for several golf courses if that floats your boat.
