Colorado NM at Grand Junction

We stayed in Grand Juction after seeing the Black Canyon of the Gunnison NP.  We got there just before 6 pm in order to drive the 23 miles through the Colorado National Monument where there are various stone monuments and spiers - some very strange.  We were hailed on part way through the drive.  More hail in the west - imagine that.  We were just about the only ones in the park during our drive.

Did you know that the political headwaters of the Colorado River is in Rocky Mountain NP but the geological headwaters is the Green River headwaters near Grand Teton NP?  Before 1921, the Green River and the Grand River joined in Canyonland NP, Utah to  form the Colorado River.  Seems as though a Colorado politician decided that the Colorado River headwaters had to be in Colorado.  So over the objections of government geologists and Wyoming politicians, the Grand River name was changed to the Colorado River.  This orphaned the names:  Grand Junction; Grand Lake; Grand Valley; Grand County, Utah; and Grand County, Colorado (maybe even Grand Mesa?).  So now I must go back to Wyoming to find the headwaters of the Green River.  I thought I could get near the headwaters by going to Rocky Mountain NP.
