San Antonio's Menger Hotel

Reading about the two Bills’ and Chester’s outdoor adventures and their vivid descriptions are wonderful vicarious experiences! Makes me feel like I’ve almost been there! Alas, my outdoor activities consist of daily walks with Jack (when the temperature is 75 degrees or below) and sitting on the front porch every morning sipping coffee and reading The Times. Creature comforts are now vacation "musts", and one of my favorite spots is San Antonio. Jack and I travel there every other year or so to see Texas wild flowers in the area, stroll the Riverwalk and stay at the Menger Hotel. We discovered the Menger when Jack was researching the Valley region of Texas and learned that Captain Richard King, founder of the King Ranch, died at this hotel. It was built in 1859, but has been modernized of course. They say it was the best known hotel in the southwest in the 19th century. Teddy Roosevelt recruited Rough Riders in the Menger bar in 1898. That bar is something to see: dark wood, beveled mirrors and stuffed animal heads all over the walls. The first time I visited the bar, I was served mango ice cream - another thing the Menger is known for. Rumor has it that Pres. Bill Clinton had this very mango ice cream flown to the White House while he was president. The Menger is one block over from The Alamo and also a block from the Riverwalk. The hotel’s antique furnishings in the lobby and in the rooms are extraordinary. Some rooms overlook a lovely courtyard. Great restaurant, too, which serves breakfast, lunch and dinner either buffet style or from the menu.

Thanks for posting, Lee Lee!  Might have to stop by there sometime.  Feel free to open or suggest other topics for the User Forum.  I just tried to prime the pump with the ones I posted.

Since some of us are into traveling now, we might have the opportunity to visit some of the places others have found interesting.

Since you mentioned WJC, I don't know if any of you have seen his Presidential Library in Litle Rock but from the interstate it honestly looks like a house trailer on piers.  Personally, that's the only view of it I ever expect to see.

Rosalie-

I have been to San Antonio several times but never knew about this hotel.  Thank you for posting it for us to read.
