Glacier National Park, Montana

My parents instilled in me a love of our national parks, the beauty of our country.  One of our favorites is Glacier National Park!  Back in June of 2009 Polly and I had the opportunity to take a one hour helicopter tour of the park, quite a different perspective.

On our honeymoon in '62 I took Polly through the Great Smoky Mountain National Park enroute to Camp LeJeune, NC.  She had heard the word "mountains" and was looking for something like the 14,000 foot peaks in the Rockies.  Not in the Smokys, but years later when we arrived in Glacier N.P., now that was what she thought of as mountains.

If you ever get there, take the road, on the inside of the park, that runs from Apgar Campground area to Pole Bridge.  It is a narrow dirt road, two way traffic, no problem for any car, but really gets you away from the crowds of the paved roads and a lot better chance of seeing bear, moose, wolves, etc.  And the mountain streams with their clear, cold water flowing over colored stones is captivating.

Of course, you'll want to take the "Going to the Sun" highway across the park, it's paved, a marvel of engineering especially at the time it was built.  You'll have to park your RV or travel trailer for either of these roads.  In June '09 we were unable to take either of these roads as the dirt road had been washed out for several years but should now be open and the "Going to the Sun" highway is not cleared of snow each year until July.

Lots of hiking trails here too.

Hmmm, might have to go pack the trailer and had northwest.  I'll have to come back here and add a picture or two.
