Dr. Simon Bewell Combs, Jr.

SHREVEPORT, LA-Funeral services for Dr. S. Bewell Combs, Jr. will be held at 11:00 a.m. at Summer Grove Baptist Church on Monday, May 21, 2012. Officiating will be Dr. Murry Hodge. Interment will follow in Forest Park West Cemetery. Visitation will be held Sunday, May 20, 2012 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Rose-Neath Southside.

Bewell Combs was born January 28, 1932 to Simon Bewell Combs and Cleo Rhodes Combs in Bellwood, Louisiana. He graduated from Natchitoches High School in 1956 and joined the Army. He served six months of active duty and several years in the Reserves. He married Peggy Doris McLaren June 15, 1963. She preceded him in death on June 14, 1973. He graduated from Northwestern State University in 1961 and LSU Medical School in 1965. He did his internship and residency at Confederate Memorial Medical Center (now LSU Hospital). Dr. Combs started private practice in Internal Medicine at Willis-Knighton in 1969. He was later joined by Dr. Billy Bickham and Dr. Ronald Alsup. He married Norma Lea Welch Chance on July 19, 1975. She preceded him in death on November 9, 2003. He was also preceded in death by one stepson, Brent Chance, on April 13, 2002. He retired from private practice in 1999 and started Willis-Knighton's Hyperbaric and Wound Care Center retiring in 2008 but continuing to work in clinics.

He was an ordained Baptist Deacon and member of Summer Grove Baptist Church. He volunteered his time to local organizations and went on medical mission trips. Generous with his time and money, he helped innumerable people in ways both great and small.

He is survived by one brother, Frederick D. Combs and wife Susan of Harvey, Louisiana; three daughters: Susan Hefner and husband John of Sulphur Springs, Texas, Dana Dixon and husband David of Crown Point, Indiana, and Diane Hawes of Shreveport; one stepdaughter: Renee Neel and husband Jerry of Marshall, Texas; sixteen grandchildren: Josh Hefner, Allison Hefner, Chris Hefner, Hannah Dixon, Erica Dixon, Samantha Dixon, Olivia Dixon, Charles Hawes IV, Garrett Hawes, Erin Wells and husband Kerry, Brett Neel, Chance Neel and wife Amanda, Nicholas Copeland, Sarai Fanene, Ashley, Fanene, Matthew Chance, and five great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be sons-in-law Jerry Neel, John Hefner, and David Dixon and grandsons Brett Neel, Josh Hefner, Chance Neel, Nicholas Copeland, and Chris Hefner. Honorary pallbearers are John Bowman, Jim Overton, Mark Ambrose, Kerry Wells, and Tony Richardson
