Flower Beds or Critters

Hmmm, manicured lawns and colorful flowerbeds and assorted leaf patterns are beautiful but some of us live in the deep woods.  No lawns, no flowerbeds, etc., but the other day we had two does and two sets of twin fawns in the back yard and outside our bedroom window.  We also have squirrels, rabbits, raccoons, fox, bobcat, skunks, box turtles, and birds, red headed woodpeckers, pileated woodpeckers, downy woodpeckers, tufted titmouse, blue jays, mourning doves, black capped chicadees, red birds, eastern blue birds, indigo buntings, brown thrasher, gold finches, house wrens, owls, in addition to the deer.  It really makes our day to see the blue birds.

We've had as many as 13 deer in the yard at the same time.  What a sight to see the little ones kicking up their heels and butting each other.

One neighbor even saw a small alligator crossing the road in front of our place but search as I might I never could find it.

Once we had some new fawns and baby coons crossing paths for the first time.  It was hilarious to see their interaction.  Of course, the fawns were much larger than the baby coons so had no fear of them, just wanted to look at them and smell them but the little coons wanted no part of those big fawns so scurried up the nearest tree.

I'll try to find some of our pics and post them for our "yard".  :)

Oh, and I forgot the coral snakes, the king snakes, the mud snakes, oh, and water moccasins in the "crick", etc.  :)  And, can't forget the possums and the armadillos.   Heard a noise on the porch one night, we have a covered porch all the way around the house, chased an armadillo around the porch three times before finally getting him to hit the ground.

We're up to 4 does, 5 fawns, 4 of them have now lost their spots, but 1 is a late fawn and is still fully spotted.  We also have 1 six point buck.  We just stand at the bedroom window and watch them, and watch them, and watch them.  The faces of very young fawns are almost angelic.

Had not seen much of our deer lately.  Neighbor said he had six bucks in his yard and a doe with twins.  I started putting out corn again and within just a short time, within hours, had three bucks coming in and later two does and two fawns.  Thus far, we've seen two six point, one four point and two spikes, and one big rabbit.

Some of the deer had a salad of Polly's petunias but we kept watering the "stems" and the flowers came back.  As I understand it, you can tell if a deer or rabbit has been at the salad bar by the type of bite, a rabbit leaves a sharp clean cut while a deer leaves a rough tear from pulling and deer will eat just about anything, just like their cousins, the goats.  Some of you hunters would know if that's right about the bite identification.  I just love the woods, hiking, watching the critters but don't hunt.
