The main thing I remember about Coach Melder, well, two things, a 2nd just came to mind.  The first is that like most high school boys I wanted to play football because that drew the attention of the girls.  Well, Coach Melder had a talk with my dad and said the first time I got hit at the knees was going to destroy my knees.  I was skinny and my knees looked liked knots on tooth picks.  I have been thankful for Coach Melder many times over the years for that, tho at the time, was a different story.

The second is when they had the military manuevers, Operation Sagebrush in 1956.  Coach Melder told all the boys in the PE classes to keep an eye out for your sisters because those soldiers could be less than gentlemen.   I don't remember his exact words just that caution he put out to look out for your sisters.
